If one of your DIY project is installing a kitchen sink, but you aren’t sure where to start, we’ve put together a small list of steps involved. At Action Rental & Sales Equipment Division, we have the tools and expertise you need to turn your next “To-Do” item into a “Done” item!

Step 1: Turn the new sink upside down and place it on the countertop where it is going to be installed. Trace around the outside perimeter with a pencil. When tracing the sink opening, make sure it is back at least 1-1/2″ from the front edge of the countertop. If the countertop is wider (front to back) than 24″, leave more than 1-1/2″ to retain strength at the front edge, but no more than 3″ to 4″.

After you are done tracing, remove the sink. Use a straightedge to draw a second line approximately 3/8″ to 1/2″ inside the traced outline of the sink. This line will be the actual cutline for the sink opening.

Next, drill four pilot holes, one in each corner inside the inner line using a drill with a 7/8″ spade bit. These holes are going to be your starting points for sawing the hole, so make sure they are large enough to fit the blade of a jig saw or keyhole saw. Next, cut the hole for the sink, using a jig saw to cut along the inner line between each hole. Helpful Hint: Since the rim of the sink will cover the sawed edges, while it is important to follow the line it is not crucial for the edges to be perfectly straight. If you don’t have a jigsaw, a keyhole saw will work just as well for both curved and straight cuts.

Step 2: Before installing the sink, place a bead of plumbers putty along the edge of the drain opening inside the sink and then press the strainer body into spot. Next, turn the sink upside down and tighten the strainer locknut with a wrench. Helpful Hint: Make sure to hold the strainer steady with pliers while tightening to keep it from turning. Wipe away any excess plumber’s putty.

Next, you will want to fit the gasket on the sink drain pipe (tailpiece) and attach it to the strainer bottom with a slip nut. It is easiest to tighten this nut by hand. For most threaded connections, apply a sealant such as plumbers putty, silicone tape or “pipe dope” to the threads to ensure a watertight connection.

Please note that if a garbage disposal will be installed with the sink, you will need to attach the unit directly below the drain fitting before installing the tailpiece

Step 3: Apply a “rope” of plumbers putty around the perimeter of the underside of the sink. Now you will want to carefully flip the sink over and place it carefully (with all of the drains and attachments secure) into the hole. Press firmly to make sure the sink is seated against the countertop.

Next, use mounting clips to pull the sink down tight to the countertop. These clips hook onto the sink lip from below the countertop. Tighten with a screwdriver. After the sink is positioned securely in place, apply plumbers putty around the underside of the faucet body or its mounting plate and install it into the sink.

Finally, attach all plumbing connections to the house drain line and water supply tubing. Apply a bead of silicone caulking around the perimeter of the sink where it meets the counter to seal any gaps. Fill the sink with water and leave it overnight to add weight and help it settle in place. Afterward, retighten the sink clips if necessary.

When it gets cold outside, it is easy for pipes to freeze or break. Here are some handy tips on what to do if that happens.

If you turn on a faucet and get no water, your pipes may be frozen. If your pipes freeze, there are some procedures you can follow to thaw them. Please note that the sooner the problem is recognized, the better your chances of minimizing the damage.

Some techniques for thawing frozen pipes include:

– If possible, expose a boxed-in area to the inside heat. An example includes opening some ceiling tiles if your home has a drop ceiling.

– Use a heat gun. However, be extremely careful as the heat from the heat gun will ignite any wood or paper it contacts. DO NOT use torches to thaw pipes!

– Rubbing the pipes with warm, damp rags may slowly thaw the line.

An additional note, if you do not have water for an extended period of time, special attention should be given to hot water heaters and boilers.

What to do if a pipe breaks? First, shut off your water immediately using your home’s shutoff valve.

There are actually two major shutoff valves in line with your service. The first valve, called a curb stop, is generally located near the property line and is normally housed by a cylinder with a cap on it called the curb box. The other major valve is located in the home next to the water meter. Other valves may be near plumbing appliances such as sinks and toilets.

By keeping your main valve in good working condition you will be able to turn your water off in the event of an emergency. Older style gate valves should be turned periodically due to possible corrosion build-up. Newer Teflon coated ball valves should stay in working order without any regular turning.

What if my main valve does not work in an emergency? If for some reason, your main valve does not work in the event of an emergency, call your local Public Works Department so that someone can shut off your water.

It may be early in the year, but now is the time to start planning your spring get togethers! If you are planning on celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with a party, here is a handy timeline to follow!

Four Weeks Out

–       Create a budget

–       Choose a theme

–       Write a guest list

–       Choose a location

–       Send invitations

–       Decide on a menu (If you are cooking, make as much as you can ahead of time to minimize cooking on the party day! Make a timeline for cooking, freezing, thawing, reheating, etc.)

–       If it’s potluck, assign the dishes.

–       Order any extras you might need (cakes, pies, cupcakes, etc).

–       Confirm your rental items (plates, cups, glassware, coffee urns, tables, chairs, table linens, serving pieces, etc. Arrange for early delivery on party day.

–       If it is a large group, consider hiring help for kitchen, serving, or bartending.

Two Weeks Out

–       Confirm everything from 4 weeks out has been done

–       Assemble party favors, if desired.

–       Start compiling party music, games, and other entertainment.

One Week Out

–       Review menu preparation timeline: are you on target with make-ahead dishes?

–       Purchase non-perishable food items and candles, firewood, etc.

–       Finalize RSVPs.

Two Days Out

–       Make sure the venue is ready.

–       Purchase perishables such as meat, dairy, and produce.

–       Make sure camera is charged and ready.

One Day Out

–       Set table, decorate buffet, set-up the bar.

–       Purchase and arrange flowers and/or decorations.

Party Day

–       Purchase fresh seafood.

–       Buy party ice.

–       Take delivery of rented equipment.

–       Garnish party platters with fresh herbs, edible flowers, and fruit.

–       Eat something light before guests arrive.

–       Relax. Seriously. A relaxed host makes for happy guests.

–       Spin the tunes and greet your guests.

If you are like many, the New Year has brought you a new list of “To-Do” items. If installing carpet is one of those “To-Do’s” here is a list of instructions on how to do it! At Action Rental & Sales Equipment Division, we have the tools you need to turn your next “To-Do” item into a “Done” item!

Step 1: Determine the area of your room by measuring the longest walls in your room. Multiply the length and width, and divide by 9 to determine the square yardage. A helpful hint is to add 10 percent to allow for errors, irregularities and pattern matching.

Step 2: Make sure the surface to be carpeted is smooth and clean. Ensure any paint or joint compound has been scraped up. Finally sweep and vacuum the floor completely.

Step 3: If possible, remove any doors from the room so you will not have to work around them.

Step 4: Install the Tackless Strips by cutting the strips to size with a strip cutter or heavy snips. Next, nail the strips 1/2″ from the wall. Make sure you don’t install tackless strips across thresholds or doorways; the tacks on the strips are sharp and could poke through the carpet and hurt your feet. Tackless strips are available a variety of widths, thicknesses and heights.

Step 5: Lay out the carpet pad perpendicular to the direction you plan to install the carpet and staple it near the tackless strips with a staple hammer.

Step 6: Staple the seam of the pad, alternating staples so that they don’t end up beside one another. Make sure to stretch the padding so that the pieces are butted tightly together.

Step 7: Feel through the padding to locate the tackless strip. Then, use a utility knife to cut away the padding along the interior edge of the strip so that all the tacks are exposed.

Step 8: Notch corners for trimming by measuring the room at its longest point, and add 3″ to the measurement. Helpful Hint – Take the carpet outside if possible, and notch the back on both sides at the appropriate length.

Step 9: Roll the carpet with the back facing outward until the notched areas show. Next, make a chalk line that goes from notch to notch. Cut the back of the carpet along the chalk line, roll up the carpet, and take it back inside.

Step 10: Roll out the carpet into the room. Try to keep it as straight as possible and then cut away excess carpet. Make sure to leave about 3″ extra next to the walls.

Step 11: Where carpet edges join, you will need to create a seam. The seamed edges of both carpet segments must be straight. Helpful Hint – Make sure to check the edges. Don’t assume that a factory edge is straight.

Step 12: Place a piece of seaming tape under the seam, adhesive side up. Heat the seaming iron to the temperature recommended by the tape manufacturer, and rest it directly on the tape for 15 to 30 seconds. Next, slowly slide the iron along the tape, and press the seam into the melted glue behind the iron. After the pieces are joined, place heavy objects on the seam to hold it in steady as the glue dries. Seams need to run parallel to the room’s main light source. Helpful Hint – Make sure the pile of both pieces leans in the same direction.

Step 13: Make sure the carpet fits around obstacles. Use a carpet knife to trim if necessary.

Step 14: Attach the carpet to the tackless strips at one end of the room, using a knee kicker. Make sure to place the face of the knee kicker against the carpet about 3″ away from the wall, and then forcefully hit the padded end to stretch the carpet over the tackless strips.

Step 15: Trim excess carpet near the walls with a wall trimmer, which rests against the wall and provides a straight cut at the correct spot. Use a stair tool to press the cut edges underneath the baseboard trim.

Step 16: Attach the strips on the other side of the room using a power stretcher. For corners and alcoves where the power stretcher might not be able to reach, use the knee kicker and stair tool.

Step 17: Any areas where the carpet ends without abutting a wall, such as a threshold, you will need to nail a binder bar there. Stretch the carpet using the knee kicker tool in order to connect to the hooks in the binder bar. Next, use a wooden block or scrap piece of lumber to close the binder bar onto the edge of the carpet.

Step 18: When all the carpet is in place to your liking, cutout the vent openings.

5 ways to winterize your home 

You are ready for the cold weather with sweaters and mittens, but is your house ready for the cold months ahead? Here are some easy ways to get your home ready for winter!

1. Clean gutters  
Once leaves have fallen, remove them (and other debris) from your house’s gutters.  This will help prevent clogging when it rains and snows this winter. Clogged drains can form ice dams, where water is backed up.  These can cause water damage to your house.

2. Block leaks
One of the best ways to winterize your home is to simply block obvious leaks around your house, both inside and out. 

To find the leaks walk around inside holding a lit incense stick to the most common draft areas: recessed lighting, window and door frames and electrical outlets.  Door sweeps can close spaces under exterior doors, caulk or tacky rope can help with door and window frames.  Outlet gaskets can be installed in electrical outlets that share a home’s outer walls which is where cold air often enters.

3. Get your ducts in a row Ducts aren’t always easy to see, but you can often find them exposed in the attic, the basement and crawlspaces. Repair places where pipes are pinched, which impedes flow of heated air to the house, and fix gaps with a metal-backed tape (duct tape actually doesn’t stand up to the job over time).Ducts also should be vacuumed once every few years, to clean out the abundant dust, animal hair and other gunk that can gather in them and cause respiratory problems.

4. Reverse fans
Reversing a ceiling fan is a small, yet effective tip that people don’t often consider.  By reversing the direction from summer operation, the fan will push warm air downward and force it to recirculate.  As you look upwards, the fan blades should be turning clockwise.

5. Check alarms
If you didn’t check the operation and change the batteries on your home’s smoke detectors at the fall time change, now is a great time to check.  Detectors should be replaced every 10 years.

8.  De-thatch / aerate areas as necessary.

9.  Winterize mowers, trimmers, and hand tools.

10.  Winterize irrigation system, and store hoses and sprinklers.
