Pressure Washers 101:

When to use them, and why they are such a big deal.

When you look out at your concrete driveway, the last thing you want to see is a bunch of dark stains and spots. Sadly, things that are outside will, inevitably, get dirty, and the kind of grime you get on the outside of your home is much tougher than what you’ll face on the inside. Thankfully, we have a secret weapon that can literally blast away that grime in seconds: pressure washers.
Pressure washers are gas or electric powered pumps that connect to your garden hose and shoot water out at unbelievably high speeds. Most pressure washers spray water somewhere between 1,400 and 4,000 PSI, allowing them to blast away stains and grime most cleaning tools can’t even touch. This makes them excellent for cleaning hard-to-get stains away from things like a concrete driveway or the vinyl siding on a house. Plus, it’s incredibly satisfying to watch years of built up grime disappear before your eyes as your blast it away with a pressure washer. Some stains can become so deep that they can resist even the might of a pressure washer, so make sure you regularly pressure wash surfaces that need it to keep those stains from getting too comfortable. Pressure washing can do wonders for all kinds of surfaces and applications, including:
  • Gutters
  • Concrete or Tile Patios
  • Concrete Driveways
  • Garage Floors
  • Wood, Metal, or Plastic Fences
  • Vinyl Siding
  • Yard or Patio Furniture
  • Wooden Decks
You can even use a pressure washer to clean things like your car or boat! The possibilities are limitless, but there are some things to keep in mind before you start pressure washing everything in sight.
Higher powered pressure washers can remove more than just dirt, they can remove whatever it’s stuck on too. If you’re looking to get dirt off of a painted surface, like a wooden deck, choose a less powerful pressure washer to prevent damage to your paint. Higher powered washers can also damage some surfaces, chipping away mortar between bricks and denting aluminum if you unleash a concentrated stream on those kinds of materials for too long. If you’re working with a surface that you think could be damaged by high pressure water, avoid letting the stream rest on one area for too long, or consider using a less powerful pressure washer.
Pressure washing does wonders for all kinds of things around your home, and is useful almost any time of the year for nearly every imaginable use. If you’re ready to make things around your home look brand new again, stop by Action Rentals and Sales and check out our selection of pressure washers available for rent. We have you covered, from low powered machines perfect for most regular jobs to 4,000 PSI monsters that will remove stains so it’s like they never existed at all. Stop by our store at 1861 North Eastman Road, check us out online, or give us a call at 423-226-0962, and get your hands on the ultimate cleaning tool.

Planning Your Dream Wedding

When planning your dream wedding, you want to control every little detail, from how long the ceremony lasts all the way down to what color the napkins are. Sadly, there is one thing you can’t control: the weather. Bad rain or heavy winds can throw off even the best laid wedding plans, so it pays to be prepared for unexpected weather. The best way to keep mother nature from messing up your day is with a tent, but with so many options out there it can be difficult to know what kind of tent best fits your wedding. To help you find the perfect shelter, here is our guide to the different tents you can rent from Action Rentals and Sales.

What kind of tent?

There are two basic types of tents: pole tents and frame tents. Pole tents are mounted using poles at the center points of the tent, with anchors along the edges to keep it tied down. Pole tents have the classic swooping roof many people think of when they picture a wedding tent, and they tend to have a very elegant air to them. Pole tents do, however, have to be supported by the poles in the middle of the tent, which can be somewhat obstructive. Additionally, pole tents require around 5-8 feet of clearance for the stakes around the tent, so they may not be able to squeeze into tighter spaces.

Frame tents, on the other hand, have the material stretched out over a metal frame to keep it in place. This gives them a somewhat boxier look than pole tents, but this allows much more control over the layout of your tent space. You can even attach multiple frame tents to give yourself more room or a layout that best fits your taste. Frame tents also fit into tighter spaces than pole tents, so some venues may warrant the use of a frame tent that can squeeze between trees or hedges. You can, however, see the actual frame of a frame tent from inside, so many wedding planners opt to use a tent liner to hide that metal frame from view.

Make it Yours

Once you know the basic type of tent you need, you can start to customize that tent to suit your venue and the look you want. One very unique tent we offer at Action Rental and Sales is our clear top tent. With a see-through roof, the clear top tent section works with most frame tent frames and gives your guests a chance to enjoy the scenery around them and some natural light within the tent. If you need to close up the sides of your tent, sidewalls will be your best choice. Sidewalls can work with both pole and frame tents, and even feature see through “windows” to let light in as well.

Whether you want your tent to be the centerpiece of your wedding, or if you just need it around in case the weather turns sour, Action Rentals and Sales can help you find exactly what you need. To see examples of some of our tents in action and see the options we have available for rent, check out our website, or swing by our showroom at 1861 North Eastman Road. Planning Holiday Parties

Are you hosting a family get together for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas this year? Whether throwing a small, casual dinner or a large, formal feast, advance planning will make sure everything goes smoothly and doesn’t wear you out! Some things to consider ahead of time:

The Guest List – Make a list of guests, including the number of children, and inquire in advance about any food allergies or restrictions or alcohol preferences to avoid unexpected and unpleasant surprises.

The Menu – Plan your menu, review recipes and prepare your shopping list. Plan what you can make and freeze ahead of time, what needs to be made when and schedule accordingly. Don’t forget to re-stock any bar items needed.

Seating and Serving – Do you have enough tables, chairs and linens? Check your inventory of your china/dishes, flatware, stemware and glasses to be sure you have enough for all guests. What about party equipment you may not have on hand, such as a champagne fountain, chocolate fountain or margarita machine? Let our experts at Action Rentals help!

Winterize Your Home!

Fall is the perfect time of year to winterize your home, or perform maintenance that will keep your home in the best shape to get through the colder winter months and save on heating costs. Here are some helpful tips.

Starting on the outside, check the condition of your roof, gutters and downspouts. Clean out the gutters and install leaf guards if not already in place. Use a hose to spray water into the downspouts to remove any debris. Check the flashing and replace any loose or worn shingles or tiles to insure water cannot enter your house. If you have fireplaces, be sure to cap or screen the top of the chimneys to keep animals out. Hire a chimney sweep to remove soot and creosote from the chimneys. Inspect the dampers for proper opening and closing. And, don’t forget to stock up on firewood!

Next, inspect your foundation and seal up any cracks or holes. Secure crawlspace entrances. Clear all leaves and debris away from the foundation. Insulate any exposed plumbing pipes to prevent freezing. Check all exterior doors and windows for tight seals. Seal/caulk any cracks and replace any cracked or broken window glass. Switch out summer screens with the glass replacements. If you have older model windows, consider covering them with plastic to keep warm air inside and cold air out. Install weather stripping around doors to prevent cold air from entering your home. If you have ceiling fans in your home, now is the time to change the rotation direction: counter-clockwise rotation produces cooling breezes and clockwise rotation produces warmer air.

Finally, if you have central heat and air, get your furnace and ducts inspected and cleaned by an HVAC professional. Remove any flammable materials from the area surrounding your furnace. Be sure to change your furnace filters each month. Purchase smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries and change them out when daylight savings time ends on November 1. If you don’t have these detectors, purchase, install and test them to assure your family’s safety during the coming colder months.

Keep Your Home Looking Great With Pressure Washing

3678

Every day you take actions to keep your home and car looking their best. Whether it is mowing your yard, washing your car, cleaning the inside of your home, trimming your hedges, sweeping your sidewalks or vacuuming your carpets, you take care of your property. However, one thing many people miss is pressuring washing the siding of their homes.

If you regularly pressure wash your home, it is much easier than you may think.  The longer you let dirt build up on the siding, the harder it is to clean.  Pressure washing is a quick and easy way to refresh your home’s exterior and make it look new again. In addition to your home, pressure washing your sidewalks and driveway help immensely.

Don’t forget the tables!

When planning your wedding, it is sometimes easy to overlook minor details such as the guest book table or favor table. When you think of tables at your wedding, odds are you think of the tables in which your guests will sit or the tables where your food will be served. Don’t forget to consider renting a few more tables to add to the feel of your reception. Here are some helpful ideas!

DSC_0007_Action

Guest Book Table

Whether you have the traditional guest book or a unique way to remember your guests, you’ll more than likely need a place to put it. It’s easy to think you can just set it up anywhere, but consider allocating a special spot and adding a floral arrangement or even candles to make the guest book table feel a part of your special reception.

Favor Table

Because the favors of your wedding will most likely take up the majority of this table, not many decorations are needed. Add a pretty linen tablecloth and a chalkboard or sign instructing the guests to take a favor home.

Cocktail Tables

During cocktail hour at your reception, more than likely guests won’t be ready to sit down so have a few raised “bar-like” tables for your guests to stand around and chat to enjoy their beverage. Add some candles and smaller floral arrangements.

Gift Table

It is sometimes easy to forget you do receive gifts at the wedding from those friends or relatives that do not make it to wedding showers before the big day. Add a pretty basket or box to collect loose cards and also an area for gifts to be placed on the table. Consider adding a framed sign of you and your hubby as a nice added touch.

Build a Deck!

It’s almost summertime, which means more evenings will be spent taking in those mild summer nights. Enjoy those evenings on a brand-new deck…and what’s more, build that brand-new deck yourself with the help of equipment rentals from Action Rentals!

Give your backyard a makeover. Create an “outdoor room” that is a great place for entertaining friends or letting your toddlers play.

Not only do you need to select the structural materials, and the decking type, there are post options and caps that can add elegance and personalize your deck.

Follow these tips to ensure the smoothest building process:

  1. Foundations needs to be deeper the higher the deck is off the ground.
  2. For ground-level decking, go below the frost line.
  3. Post holes should be at least 24 inches deep. (Don’t forget the post-hole digger).
  4. Deck shape can be easily adjusted to any requirement with minimal woodworking skills.
  5. Decking boards can be straight, run diagonally, or you can create more complex chevron or square designs.
  6. Trim edges with a power saw or jig saw to create curves. You may need to use double joists to enable you to fix more complex designs.
  7. Newel posts need to be at least 36 inches high and support the balustrade at least every 6 feet. Railings are mandatory if the deck is over 20 inches off the ground.
  8. The frame for raised decking is constructed from pressure-treated lumber.
  9. On a concrete base, posts can be adhered to the ground using bolt-down post brackets.
  10. Safety first! A raised deck requires a handrail.
